Do you like to knit? Hou je van breien?

I love patchwork and quilting, but also knitting, crochet and stitchery.
Years ago I decided it had to be quilting; that was the most creative work for me at that time.
But I did some knitting last year and discovered that I can make me own designs.
And that is what I love to do: design!

So, the sweet hearts are not only about appliqué, but I started to knit a scarf. Not for use, but to show different patterns. In Dutch we call it a 'breirol', I don't know the English equivalent.
In november I bought 4 balls of whit cotton, 1 ball red, 1 ball pink and 1 ball orange and made a start.

You can see some hearts as a begin....
Interested? Pick up your needles and thread...
Later this week I will give you the first part of the pattern.

I don't know where this project will end. 1 meter or more?

With love,
Françoise

Appliqué Tutorial

A little explanation how I work with hand appliqué.
I learned this method from Ted Storm, she makes wonderful, special appliqué quilts
First I trace my heart at the front side of the fabric
Cut the inner corner with a small, sharp pair of scissors.
After that I start with folding the seam allowances piece by piece to the back and secure it with a running stitch. Use thread with a contrasting color. Take small steps at al the curves.
At the inner corner I also used a hem stitch because there's less seam allowances.

With a ruler I put my heart on the right place. Inner and outer point are on the diagonal
Pin your heart and use the same colour of thread to appliqué. I use my little wooden stick (kitchen) to push little threads under the heart. It works better than a needle. Even wet is better!
Tear away your running thread...and because it was contrasting it works well.
After the embroidery stitches, I cut away my background behind my heart. The dark colour makes the light hearts less bright.

A lot of succes,
With love,
Françoise

Epiphany/Driekoningen

Yesterday it was Epiphany. I made a heart with three little flowers. One in blue, one in red, one in green: they symbolize the three kings.
The comment I got at home from mister X. (six year old): Normally the red king is first...
